"Can anyone tell me the origin of this patch. It has been shown on the uniforms of two Marine Corps Heroes, Sgt. Maj. Daniel J. Daly who won two Medals of Honor and LtGen John A. Jejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps. Both worn back in the 1900's. "
He later found his answer & wrote:
"I have subsequently learned the following from my friends
at the U. S. Postal Service (from which I retired with 18 years of service in
1987 following 22 years as a U. S. Marine [1947-1968]):
The Daniel J. Daly stamp features a detail from a circa 1919 photograph of Daly
and the insignia of the 73rd Machine Gun Company, which is a variation on the
Army’s 2nd Infantry Division insignia. During World War I, Daly served as a
Marine with the 73rd Machine Gun Company in the 2nd Infantry Division.
The John A. Lejeune stamp features a detail from a circa 1924 photograph of
Lejeune. The stamp also depicts the insignia of the Army’s 2nd Infantry
Division, which Lejeune commanded during World War I.
So it looks like we've solved the "mystery." Why the "Indian Head"
represents the (Army's) 2nd Infantry Division is beyond me, but that
image will be on these new Marine Hero stamps coming out in 2005. If you want
to post this on your web site that is okay with me. It may be an item of
interest to your readers, who I assume (I always get in trouble when I use that
word) are Native Americans?
Again, many thanks, and Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful),"

So, we thought we would share this info with everyone. A big THANK-YOU,
